Here are some KEY questions that you may want to ask in Part 1

  • Context Before:  What was the author talking about in the paragraph before your paragraph?

    •  Is your paragraph a new subject or is the author continuing the same discussion he was already talking about in the paragraph before?

      1. Does YOUR PARAGRAPH start off with words like, “Therefore”, “Thus”, “Because of this”, or other words or phrases which somehow CONNECT your paragraph to the paragraph (or so) before it)?

        1. HOW does your paragraph connect to the paragraph before it?

          1. Is it EXPLAINING the paragraph before?

          2. Is it ADDING TO the paragraph before?

          3. Is it APPLYING what the author said in the paragraph (or chapter) before to his readers or Christians in general or even all people?

  • Context After: In the following paragraph, does the author continue the topic he was discussing in your paragraph or does he change the subject?

    1. Does THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH start off with words like, “Therefore”, “Thus”, “Because of this”, “But”, “And” or other words or phrases which somehow CONNECT your paragraph to the paragraph (or so) after it)?

    2. Is the author done talking about his subject and moving to a new topic?

      1. (“Now, concerning your letter…” = new subject,

      2. “But I say to you, if anyone…” = applying what he said in your paragraph to his readers).

    3. HOW does the following paragraph connect to your paragraph?u

      1. Is it EXPLAINING your paragraph?

      2. Is it ADDING TO your paragraph?

        1. Is it APPLYING what the author said in your paragraph to his readers or Christians in general or even all people?

Before you ask any more questions, you need to figure out what KIND of writing this is.  This will help you ask questions that fit the writing.
